Allan’s Snake’s Alive • Maybe it’s not actually a proper snake, but an XC Falcon hardtop with an ownership lineage that starts with the name Allan George Moffat must surely be as potent, as venomous, as any real Cobra. This is the story not of the XC hardtop Moffat drove on the track in 1978, but the one he drove to the track.

Not the Kingswood! • Yes, the Kingswood… It was Holden’s least-likeliest rally car, and yet within a 12-month period it scored three outright rally victories along with several respectable placings, in the hands of some of Australia’s best rally drivers – including three Australian rally champions, along with none other than Peter Brock.

The tin-top Tasman Cup • The TCM Trans-Tasman Challenge is a terrific concept, featuring the best of Kiwi retro touring car muscle taking on the local Australian Touring Car Masters teams. But as Paul Newby explains, it’s not the first time top tourers from both sides of the ditch have met on Australian soil in a formal Trans-Tasman competition.

A blast from the past • Scenes from the 2026 Apex Steel Australian Muscle Car Masters meeting at Sydney Motor Sport Park on August 29-30.

The AuBel alliance • It’s 40 years since an unlikely endurance racing duo scored their best result together on the Mountain. Yet a fine showing in the dramatic and tragic 1986 James Hardie 1000 was just the tip of the iceberg for an Australian-Belgian partnership that tackled the world’s two biggest tin-top classics.

My Muscle Car • This is a good, honest and genuine Falcon GT, but it’s a car with a unique and interesting story lurking under the bonnet.

1986 James Hardie 1000 An era ends • The last Great Race on the old pre-Caltex Chase layout marked the end of an era, and it delivered an old-style result as Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey combined aboard the latter’s VK Commodore to street the field in what was the race’s last genuine privateer victory.

Hooley Dooley! • For Western Australian privateers like Graeme Hooley, racing on the east coast in the ’80s was as logistically difficult as it was expensive. But through hard work and determination, some great business relationships and a bit of help from some of the most famous names in motorsport, Hooley made it happen.

Slot car addiction

The bitterest pill • Not a drop of rain and just the one Safety Car period – for some, that’s a recipe for Bathurst boredom. In actual fact, the 2026 Repco Bathurst 1000 will go down as one of the truly great Great Races – and will forever be remembered for the dramatic and unexpected way it ended.
