Period piece • In an AI-powered world, fashion is embracing the ghosts of its past with vintage pannier skirts and frills taking over the runways. Jess Cartner-Morley explores what this means for the modern wardrobe
agenda
Fringe MOVEMENT • The new guard of creative directors at fashion’s biggest houses all have one shared love this season. Fringing was the unifying thread running throughout the SS26 shows, from Louise Trotter’s new Bottega Veneta to Pierpaolo Piccioli’s reimagined Balenciaga and Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel debut. All had a job to make some noise this season, and opting for rows of dramatic trims that danced down the catwalk became the approach of choice. To borrow a phrase from J Lo: ‘Let’s get loud.’
Touching BASE • Forget the cosy promise of a woollen bobble hat this winter – its sporty sibling, the baseball cap, is taking first place instead. Wrap yours in a headscarf, go for a bold colour or co-ordinate it with your prints. Just know that topping off your look with one is a sure-fire way to hit a fashion home run.
Books are MY BAG • ELLE edits the year’s most anticipated reads and bags to carry them around in (book jackets just visible, of course)
Magic CARPET ride • For some designer-celebrity pairs, the awards circuit has become the ultimate stage
Screen STARS • Fashion brands are aiming for the big screen, and these four behemoths continue to blur the lines
Royal NAVY • What do Diana, Princess of Wales, Billie Eilish and the SS26 catwalks have in common? They all understood the power of a navy blazer. This season’s must-have was seen at Michael Rider’s Celine (belted and paired with powder-blue palazzo trousers) and Daniel Fletcher’s Mithridate (worn with a leather kilt and cropped knit). Try relaxed, oversized fits, styled with short-hem co-ordinating pieces or equally voluminous denim. Invest now for the wisest ROI you’ll make this season.
